RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Seattle U baseball dropped a pair of Western Athletic Conference games at California Baptist on Saturday, 9-7 and 11-7. The Redhawks (7-16, 5-6 WAC) collected 13 hits in each game, but surrendered key multi-run innings to the Lancers (18-7, 7-4 WAC).
Game One
Seattle U rallied from a 5-2 deficit with a three-run fifth inning. Shane Jamison and Matt Boissoneault drove in runs in the frame before Gavin Rork's sacrifice fly in the sixth put the Redhawks on top, 6-5. After CBU tied the score in the seventh, Aidan Welch drove in Julian Kodama in the eight for a 7-6 lead. But the Lancers would walk off in the ninth, scoring two runs, including the game-winner on a wild pitch.
Jamison finished 4-of-5 with an RBI, Kodak went 3-of-4 with three runs and Boissoneault drove in two runs on two hits. Starting pitcher Peter Chronowski struck out four while giving up eight hits and one walk for six earned runs in the seven-inning no-decision. Reliever Morgan White took the loss after giving up two runs in the ninth.
Game Two
The Redhawks struck first in the nightcap as a Jamison sacrifice fly scored Rork in the top of the first. But the Lancers would answer with five runs in the home half of the frame before starting pitcher Nestor German settled in to record a strikeout and fly out to end the inning.
Single runs in the third and fourth by Seattle U trimmed the deficit to two, but CBU answered with two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth. Trailing 11-5 through eight complete, the Redhawks looked to rally in their final at-bats. With one out, Derek Gellos drove in a pair of runs to make it 11-7, but a strikeout and ground out would halt the late effort.
Gellos had three hits and two RBI to lead the Redhawk battery. Moissoneault and Jamison added two hits apiece. German took the loss after striking out three, walking five and allowing 10 hits for nine earned runs in 4.1 innings.
The Redhawks and Lancers wrap up the three-game series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon at Totman Stadium.
