SEATTLE – Seattle University Athletics' seventh annual Red Tie Celebration once again raised the bar for success, raising more than $725,000 at the dinner and auction event May 18, 2019 at Chihuly Garden and Glass.

The revamped event highlighted personal stories of student-athletes Delante Jones (men's basketball) and Emma Mitchell (softball), an inspiring keynote speech from women's soccer junior, and cell and molecular biology major, Jessie Ray, and a live auction.

The record amount raised surpassed last year's total by more than $100,000. Highlights of the live auction included limited-edition Jim Whittaker, '52, signed photos donated by Whittaker and Dianne Roberts, a Los Angeles Lakers experience with Elgin and Elaine Baylor donated by the Baylors and the Lakers Youth Foundation, a private dinner at the Space Needle donated by 2019 Red Tie Chairs Jeff and Korynne Wright and the Space Needle, a trip to the 2020 Final Four with Head Coach Jim Hayford, and a trip to Italy, including a visit to the Vatican and meeting with Pope Francis donated by John McCaffrey.

Following Ray's poignant speech, which tied together her experiences as a soccer player, a cell and molecular biology major and the opportunities provided to her through the Jesuit education Seattle University provides, the night was capped by the annual "Raise the Paddle."

"We are honored and humbled by the generosity in support of our student-athletes and sport programs," said Director of Athletics Shaney Fink. "We are so grateful for the investment in the lives of Seattle U students-athletes."
