OREM, Utah – (May 13) Seattle University baseball closed out its final regular-season road trip on Saturday at Utah Valley as the Wolverines escaped a series sweep by defeating the Redhawks 9-2 at UCCU Ballpark.
The Redhawks (32-18, 13-8 WAC) had already clinched the Western Athletic Conference series win with two victories on Friday. UVU moved to 15-33 overall and 6-15 in WAC play.
In a reversal of roles from Friday, it was the Wolverines who got on the board early, pushing a pair of runs across the plate in the home half of the first off of SU starter Nick Meservey.
The Redhawks cut the spread in half in the top of the third on a Dalton Hurd RBI-double that scored Justin Mazzone. But Utah Valley answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning. The home team then broke the game open in the fourth with five runs, including three off three-run homer.
Each team would score once in the seventh, Seattle U's coming off a Jake Cosgrove solo homer, his third of the season.
Meservey took the loss for the Redhawks, his first decision of the year. The Wolverines Kaden Schmitt struck out 10 in the complete-game victory.
The Redhawks return to Bannerwood Park to close out the 2018 regular-season against WAC-leader Grand Canyon. The three-game series will begin Thursday, May 17 with a 5 p.m. first pitch. The series continues Friday at 2 p.m. and concludes with Senior Day Saturday. The Redhawks' senior class of Lucas Denney, Austin Hansen, Dalton Hurd, Curtis Perrin, Jack Reisinger, Cameron Sterne, Sean Sutton and Ky Dye will be honored in a brief ceremony prior to the 9 a.m. first pitch.
