BELLEVUE, Wash. – (Oct. 15) Seattle University baseball closed out its fall ball play Saturday at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue, Wash., with its black and scarlet intrasquad game. The result? A 6-3 victory for the Scarlet team as junior Tyler Oldenberg was credited with the win, freshman Dawson Day earned the save and sophomore Chase Wells was named the game’s MVP.

Top of the 3rd: After Zach Wolf (JR, RHP, Dana Hills HS/Calif.) starter for Scarlet and Jake Prizina (JR, LHP, Spanish Springs HS, Nevada) starter for Black went two scoreless innings, Dawson Day (FR, UTL, Centennial HS, Oregon) singled to start the top of the third inning. Day moved to second base on a balk and, after Jake Taylor (JR, 3B, Timberline HS, Idaho) got an infield single to make it first and third for Scarlet, Cameron Sterne (SR, OF, Shorewood HS) got an RBI with a fielder’s choice to give Scarlet a 1-0 lead. Jacob Cosgrove (FR, INF, Heritage HS, Calif.) then doubled to score Stern to complete the inning with a 2-0 lead for Scarlet.

Bottom of the 3rd: Curtis Perrin (SR, INF, Skyview HS) hit a solo home run with two outs to close the gap to 2-1 after three innings of play.

Top of the 4th: Scarlet got a lead-off single by Lucas Denney (SR, INF, Spokane Falls CC) and then Justin Mazzone (FR, C, Fountain Valley HS, Calif.) got a four-pitch walk off Prizina and Black went to Brayden Weyer (FR, RHP, Peak to Peak HS, Colo.) who came in and shut down the rally to not allow a run to cross home plate.

Top of the 5th: Jake Taylor (JR, 3B, Timberline HS, Idaho) led off the inning with a single, Sterne followed with a single, then Cosgrove got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jarrod Billig (FR, LHP, Bishop Gorman HS, Nevada) then came on relief for Weyer and got Chase Wells (SO, OF, Naches HS) to strike out, but Taylor scored on a wild pitch and Austin Lively (JR, SS, Lake Washington HS) drove in Sterne with a sacrifice fly to left field. Denney followed with a RBI-single to widen the lead to 5-1 for Scarlet.

Bottom of the 6th: Black made a slight comeback with a lead-off base hit by Perrin, a bunt by Dalton Hurd (SR, OF, Bend HS, Oregon) move Perrin to second base and team captain Sean Sutton (SR, 1B, Couer ‘d Alene HS, Idaho) drove in Perrin to close the gap, 5-2.

Top of the 7th: Alden Huschle (SO, RHP, Mt. Si HS) came on in relief and gave up a lead-off walk to Wells. Wells stole second and then advance to third with a fielder’s choice out by Lively. Denney then walked and Mazzone drove a 3-0 fastball to the outfield for a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.

Bottom of the 7th: Black made a push in the inning when Max Werner (JR, UTL, Archbishop Mitty HS, Calif.) starter the inning with a single off reliever Wyatt Boone (FR, RHP, Jserra Catholic HS, Calif.) and then after a fly out, Jack Reisinger (SR, C, San Juan Hills HS, Calif.) single to make it first and third with one out. Tyler Yeh (SO, RHP, Palisades HS, Calif.) came on in relief and got a great diving play off a line-drive by Perrin who was robbed by second baseman Cosgrove to get the second out of the inning. Werner then scored on a wild pitch to close the gap to 6-3 before the inning ended.

Bottom of the 9th: Day came in to close the game, but Kyler Murphy (JR, C, Liberty HS, Ariz.) led off the inning with a single, but Day then struck out Werner and got Drake Maningo (FR, UTL, Green Valley HS, Nevada) to fly out to centerfield to get the second out of the inning. Reisinger then drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate, but Day got Perrin out to secure the win for Scarlet, 6-3.
