SEATTLE – (Oct. 1) No. 20 Seattle University men’s soccer beat San Jose State, 1-0, Sunday afternoon. Alex Roldan scored in the first half of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) victory at Championship Field.

"They're hard to play against," said Coach Pete Fewing. "The goal we scored was an opportunistic one. I'm thrilled with the shutout and I thought the back four was fantastic today."

Seattle U (8-2-0, 2-0-0 WAC) slowly worked into its rhythm slowly Sunday, gradually strangling the Spartan back line. Josh Adachi made a diving save 20 minutes in and then the Redhawk attack went to work. The hosts peppered SJSU (2-7-1, 0-1-1 WAC) with 10 first-half shots and a pair of corner kicks. After an extended possession, SU turned the ball over. Cody Gibson worked to get the ball back, and after stellar passing, a Tyler John pass deflected off a Spartan defender in the box. Roldan was there and converted for a 1-0 lead at the 29:33 mark.

The Redhawks kept up their strong work as the frame continued, but the game remained a one-goal difference at halftime.

In the second half, the teams played a physical style for much of the frame, with both sides also registering solid chances. Adachi came up with a stop on Jeremy Romero in the 52nd minute, while SJSU saved opportunities by Habib Barry and Julian Avila-Good.

SU, the national leader in shots per game, recorded a 14-3 advantage in shots Sunday.

The Redhawks travel next weekend, playing at UTRGV (Oct. 6) and Incarnate Word (Oct. 8) for a pair of WAC contests.
