SEATTLE – (Sept. 17) Seattle University men’s soccer took down Drexel, 1-0, Sunday afternoon. Cody Gibson scored his fifth goal in three games as the Redhawks recorded their 21st straight win at Championship Field. SU tallied 32 shots in the contest, marking a season-high.
SU (6-1-0) dominated the action in the first half, compiling 18 shots to just one for the visitors. Midway through the half, Robbie Landeros streaked down the right side and made a crossing pass. Medo Youssef redirected the ball to the center of the box, where Gibson settled it. The forward turned and drilled a shot into the net, giving SU a 1-0 lead at the 23:24 mark. The hosts continued to pressure the Dragons, but the score remained 1-0 at the break.
In the second frame, the Redhawks pounded the Drexel side, shooting 14 times and earning several strong opportunities. The visitors hung tough, though, and kept the game close. In the final minutes, Adachi swatted away a free kick to keep the Redhawks ahead.
Gibson has five goals in his last three outings, including the game-winner in all three contests.
The 32 attempted shots are the most by an SU squad since Oct. 5, 2007, when the Redhawks logged 39 tries in a 6-1 win over the University of Mary at Championship Field.
Seattle U returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 24, as Washington visits Championship Field. The Seattle Cup, presented by the Washington Athletic Club and the 101 Club, will be on the line for the second straight year. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
