SEATTLE – (Feb. 13) Seattle University men’s soccer product Alex Roldan has signed a contract with Seattle Sounders FC. He becomes the second Seattle U men’s soccer player to sign a Major League Soccer contract.

Roldan was taken with the 22nd pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft last month. He became the fourth SU player to be picked in the draft and the first Redhawk to be a first-round choice. Cam Weaver played at Seattle U from 2004-05 and appeared in six MLS seasons with San Jose, Houston, and Seattle.

“We are proud to welcome the next Roldan into the Sounders family. We were excited to draft Alex last month and, like his brother, we anticipate him being a positive addition to our club,” said Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey in a statement to the Sounders’ official website.

Roldan joins his brother, Cristian, on the Sounders’ roster. Cristian was the team’s MVP in 2017.

Sounders FC will play at Sacramento Republic FC for a preseason match on Thursday, Feb. 15. The team then plays a home-and-home with Santa Tecla FC on Feb. 22 and March 1. The 2018 MLS regular season kicks off on Sunday, March 4, as LA FC visits CenturyLink Field.

At Seattle U, the Pico Rivera, Calif., native started all 82 matches of his career. He helped the Redhawks win a pair of WAC Championships (2015, 2017). SU won two NCAA Tournament contests, including a 3-2 overtime win at Washington in this season’s first round.

Roldan recorded 18 goals and 17 assists at SU. He earned All-WAC First Team twice and United Soccer Coaches All-West Region First Team as a junior.
