SEATTLE (Feb. 22) – Seattle University women’s basketball opens a regular season-closing three-game home stand on Thursday, Feb. 23. The Redhawks welcome UTRGV for a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) contest at 7 p.m. at the Connolly Complex.
Coach Suzy Barcomb’s group won, 63-52, at CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, separating itself from the pack for second place. With a win Thursday, SU (12-14, 9-2 WAC) would clinch the second seed in the WAC Tournament. UTRGV (16-11, 6-5 WAC) can secure a top-four position in the postseason with a win Thursday.
In the victory at Bakersfield, Alexis Montgomery scored 17 points and Claire Metoyer contributed 12 points, a career-high 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. The Redhawks tallied a season sweep of CSUB for the first time in program history.
UTRGV is coming off an 87-67 loss at New Mexico State on Feb. 18. Shawnte’ Goff put up 16 points and 6 boards, while freshman Megan Johnson posted 13 points and 8 rebounds. The Vaqueros shot just 4-21 on three-pointers in the defeat.
Montgomery paces SU with 16.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. Kaylee Best, who scored her 1,000th career point at Grand Canyon on Feb. 16, is averaging 13.6 points and 3.9 boards a game. She leads the WAC with 67 made treys this season.
Goff is scoring 15.4 points and dishing out 3.1 assists per game. Mary Savoy is second on the team with 11 points per game, but she has not played since Jan. 21. UTRGV leads the WAC in field goal percentage defense (36.7) and steals per game (9.9).
On Jan. 28, Seattle U rallied from a 36-20 first-half deficit to win, 67-54, at UTRGV. The comeback was the largest by a Redhawk squad since Feb. 28, 2013. SU outscored the hosts, 45-18, in the second half, as the Vaqueros shot 4-31 from the floor in the final 20 minutes. Montgomery led the way with 20 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 blocks. Goff scored 27 points for UTRGV.
