Seattle U hosts Long Beach State in a New Year’s Eve contest before traveling to CSU Northridge for their non-conference finale on Saturday. The Redhawks are set to open Western Athletic Conference play for the second season in a row at home vs. UMKC on Jan. 7, 2016.

Bonvicini Approaches 700th Career Win: Joan Bonvicini has 697 career wins going into this weekend and is currently 10th on the wins list for Division I active women’s basketball head coaches. She looks to pick up her 700th career win in 2015-16.

Scouting Long Beach State (10-3): Head coach Jody Wynn recently picked up her 100th win as head coach at the Beach on Dec. 28 at Denver. Currently on a three-game winning streak, they won their own Beach Classic defeating UTEP (Dec. 18) and UNLV (Dec. 20) as well as the most recent win vs. the Pioneers. The 49ers have held eight of 11 opponents to 60 or fewer points and rank 23rd in the nation in forced turnovers per game. Raven Benton has a team-high 12.1 ppg.

Scouting CSU Northridge (2-10): The Matadors won their second straight Big West title in 2014-15 before falling to Stanford in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. CSUN lost all five starters from a season ago and return only five of 11 letterwinners, welcoming nine newcomers, and have a 2-10 record going into this weekend’s contest. CSU Northridge picked up their first win of the season in a Thanksgiving tournament vs. Penn State, also defeating Portland on the road on Dec. 18. Tessa Boagni is the team’s leading scorer (12.8), followed closely by Serafina Maulupe (12.1).

Welcome Home: The Connolly Center, now known as the Connolly Complex, recently received a face lift and renovation throughout the offseason and to start the 2015-16 season. After hosting their first three “home” games on the road, Seattle U played their first game back home vs. Boise State on Dec. 19. The interior is currently finished while the exterior portion of the project is set to be completed in mid to late January.

Play4Kay Game: The team’s annual Play4Kay game will be Feb. 20 vs. reigning WAC champions New Mexico State. The team has a goal of raising $2,016 and their donation site is located at Stay tuned as the date nears for more details.

Women in Leadership Game on Jan. 30: Seattle U women’s basketball is set to host their second annual Women in Leadership game on Saturday, Jan. 30 vs. Grand Canyon. The now annual tradition welcomes and celebrates five accomplished women from the Seattle community and will also involve the past year’s honorees.

Matzke to Join SU Hall of Fame: Mandy Matzke (1996-2000), Seattle U’s ninth all-time leading scorer (1,258) and eighth all-time leading rebounding (685) is being inducted into the Seattle U Hall of Fame in spring 2016 as part of homecoming weekend in February.

ASN Broadcast/Connolly Grand Opening: The American Sports Network will televise nationally from the Connolly Complex on Saturday, Feb. 20, a game now set for 7pm PT. In the matchup, Seattle U will host NM State, last year’s WAC tournament champions and will also hold the Grand Opening for the newly renovated Connolly Complex.
