In their final home contest of the 2009-10 campaign, the Seattle University women's basketball team fell 64-44 to Cal State Bakersfield Saturday evening. The Redhawks could not gather enough offensive momentum to stymie the aggressive and accurate Roadrunners. With the loss SU falls to 6-22 on the year, while CSUB improves to 16-10. The game marked the final home game for seniors Cassidy Murillo (Yakima, Wash.) and Ashley Brown (Kirkland, Wash.).
On Senior Night, junior Tatiana Heck (Mountlake Terrace, Wash.) had a standout game, scoring a game-leading 22 points. She has scored in double-figures in nine of her last 10 outings for the Redhawks. Heck also grabbed down six boards and was a strong inside presence for SU. Unfortunately for SeattleU, despite a strong inside presence from Heck, their offense was not able to connect and garner much momentum throughout the 40 minute contest.
SU was held to 32.1 percent (18-for-56) from the field, while Bakersfield capitalized on a majority of their offensive opportunities. They shot 48.1 percent (26-for-54) from the field and tallied four players in double-digits. Katie Williams led the way with 19 points, followed by 13 from Tamiko Davis and Kelley Tarver. Rounding out the Roadrunner foursome was Amber Williams, who scored 12 points.
On the night, Murillo had nine points and a team-leading seven boards, and Maggie McCarthy (Burlingame, Calif.) also had nine points. Both Brown and Elle Kerfoot (Surrey, B.C.) had a two points each to conclude the Redhawks scorers.
SU did manage to beat the Roadrunners in turnovers, as they forced CSUB to commit 16 to their 15. Bakersfield, who averages over 24 forced turnovers on opponents, had several moments where the SeattleU pressure was too much for them to handle.
The Redhawks will conclude the 2009-10 season at the Longwood Tournament in Farmville, Va. SU will take on Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday, Mar. 6, and conclude the year the following day with an opponent yet to be determined.
