With soccer players Kate Edstrom and Derek Rogalsky being named the Student-Athletes of the Year at the Athletics Awards Show Thursday, May 27, the Featured Student-Athlete of the Week on GoSeattleU.com wraps up its third year of existence.
From Jamie Coe of women's soccer on Aug. 25, 2009, to baseball pitcher Arlo Evasick on May 25, 2010, 36 student-athletes earned the weekly honor during the 2009-10 academic year. Over half of the honorees, 19 of them, were seniors, while seven juniors and ten sophomores picked up the recognition along the way. The women's soccer and men's track and field teams led the way with five honorees each.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have at least a cumulative grade point average of 3.0, must be at least a sophomore, and should be at Seattle University one full year. A person may not be named Featured Student-Athlete more than once in an academic year or more than twice during their career at the school.
For the second straight year, Coe was the first honoree, making her the sixth Seattle University student-athlete to be featured twice. Over the past nine months, she was joined by Jessica Gunderson, Bryson Chiu, Liz Hanohano-Hong, Mara Becker, Cassidy Murillo, Katie Antich, Katie Petersen, and Lindsay Currier as two-time honorees, bringing the number of members of that club up to 14.
The Featured Student-Athlete of the Week on GoSeattleU.com is expected to return in late August 2010, at the beginning of the soccer, volleyball, and cross country seasons. The Seattle University athletic department will be starting Year Three of the reclassification process towards Division I membership, and the men's soccer and women's soccer teams will become eligible for the NCAA Division I Tournament.
