DENVER – (Mar. 7) Seattle Univeristy men's basketball redshirt freshman Matej Kavas has been named the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, as voted on by the league's eight head coaches and released by the league office Tuesday.

Kavas earned WAC Freshman of the Year honors after scoring in double figures in nine of 14 WAC games with a season-high 24 points. In conference games only, he ranked fifth in the WAC in three-point field goal percentage (41.3), sixth in three-pointers per game (1.86), 10th in blocked shots (0.57) and 16th in scoring (11.6).

The Ljubljana, Slovenia, native was also one of five players selected to the WAC All-Newcomer Team. He was the lone freshman on the team as the remaining four members were junior transfers. 

The Redhawks have earned the fifth seed at this week's WAC Championship Tournament at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. They will face fourth seed Utah Valley on Thursday, Mar. 9 at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the WAC Digital Network and can also be heard on KTTH 770 AM or
