SAN DIEGO – Paced by a pair of freshmen, Seattle University volleyball opened the 2018 season Friday with a 3-0 sweep of Campbell University in both teams’ first match at the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State.

The Redhawks move to 1-0 with the 25-22, 25-19, 25-21 victory. The Camels, which were a 20-win team in 2017, drop to 0-1.

“It was really nice to get the season-opening win,” said Head Coach James Finley. “The team was very coachable and we made adjustments and improvements throughout the match. It was a fun day and I’m really happy for the team.”

Freshman Eve Kerschenbaum and Sofia Sanchez led Seattle U with eight kills apiece. Sophomore Rachel Stark added five kills while senior Maja Stojanovic collected four kills and five blocks. Senior setter Shae Harris dished 27 assists.

In her first collegiate match, Kerschenbaum, a 6-3 outside hitter, also added a team-high nine digs and collected four of the Redhawks’ 13 aces.

“Eve really carried a heavy load tonight and did a great job,” said Finley. “We also had quality performances from Shae and Julia, who hit .500.”

Seattle U and Campbell battled toe-to-toe in the first set before a Camel attack error followed by a Queiroz kill capped a 25-22 Redhawk win.

The Redhawks would never trail in the second set as they led by as many as seven points on their way to a 25-19 win. Queiroz was again involved in putting the set away as she put down a kill for the 24th point before combining with Harris for a block that sealed the set win.

The Redhawks battled from behind in the third set, but four service aces helped pave the way back.

The Redhawks conclude play at the Aztec Invitational on Saturday, facing host San Diego State at 11:30 a.m.
