SEATTLE – (Oct. 5) Seattle University volleyball battled hard against reigning Western Athletic Conference champion New Mexico State Thursday night in the Connolly Complex. But despite a huge third set rally, the Redhawks fell, 3-0, to the Aggies.
Unable to get much going in a 25-13, first-set loss, the Redhawks (5-12, 1-3 WAC) scored the first two points of the second set on kills by Katarina Marinkovic and Katarina Glavinic. Seattle U led or held even score with the Aggies (11-6, 3-1 WAC) until back-to-back NMSU points gave the visitor a 12-11 advantage.
Three straight Redhawk points made it 18-17 in favor of the Aggies, forcing a timeout. NMSU would pull away down the stretch for a 25-19 win.
Seattle U found itself in a massive hole early in the third as Ariadnne Sierra served seven consecutive times to help NMSU grab an 11-3 lead. But the Redhawks weren’t finished. Sierra’s run ended on a service error, and Tijana Milojevic took over Seattle U. A NMSU attack error, followed by kills from Maja Stojanovic and Glavinic made it 11-6 Aggies.
A Shae Harris and Stojanovic block made it 12-8 and forced a New Mexico State timeout. The Redhawk rally continued as the Aggies committed three straight unforced errors and a Stojanovic kill evened the score at 12-12.
The teams would battle back and forth for the remainder of the set, but a Claire Johnston service error and Anna Palmer attack error would eventually hand the Aggies the final two points of the set, 25-21.
Glavinic and Marinkovic had eight kills apiece while Harris collected 21 assists and Milojevic added 12 digs.
Seattle U continues its WAC homestead Saturday, hosting UTRGV at 1 p.m.
