DURHAM, N.H. — Seattle U volleyball was dealt a tough-luck result on Friday, falling to Brown to five sets, 3-2, during day two of the Holly Young Invitational in Durham, N.H. The Redhawks (3-2) blistered past the Bears (1-0) in the first frame, 25-13, before trading 25-20 sets in the second and third. Brown then won the fourth, 26-24, before closing the match with a 15-7 tally in the fifth.

Seattle U was paced by Eve Kerschenbaum, who finished with a match-best 20 kills as she added 10 digs for her third double-double of the season. Rachel Stark also produced double-figure kills as she registered 12, while Amaris Carter and Julia Queiroz chipped in with nine and seven, respectively. 

Accounting for the lion’s share of the Redhawks’ 62 digs was Tijana Milojevic as she finished with 17. Kailee Kurokawa followed with eight. Queiroz led all players with six blocks as Carter and Lauren McCabe each had five. 

Ezgi Ozkan finished with 36 assists in the effort and was a dig shy of a double-double.

Behind .464 hitting and 13 kills, the Redhawks blitzed Brown for a lopsided, 25-13 tally in the first. Seattle U opened with a 6-1 run before quickly pushing the difference to seven with a kill from Stark to make it 10-3. Leading 19-11 late, the Redhawks slammed the door on the first set with another 6-1 run.

SU moved out to an early 6-3 margin in the second but then battled to seven ties midway through the frame. Level at 13, Seattle U nudged out to a narrow 16-13 lead as Kerschenbaum and McCabe contributed kills while Kurokawa landed an ace. After forcing a tie at 18, the Bears registered four of the next five points for a 22-19 lead. Seattle U trimmed the deficit to two late but were unable to pull closer before Brown took the frame, 25-20, tying the match at 1-1.

In the third, the Redhawks again started quickly as they took a 7-4 lead to open. Kerschenbaum and McCabe again provided some some offense, adding kills midway through, pushing the Redhawk advantage to 13-7 during a 4-0 run. Leading 17-12, Seattle U saw its advantage shrink to two as the Bears rattled off three-straight kills. After pausing for a timeout, the Redhawks reassumed a five-point cushion as it put together a 3-0 spurt of its own, pushing the score to 20-15. The Bears tried to rally late, slicing the difference to one, 20-19, but committed three errors during the final six point to allow Seattle U to win the frame and take a 2-1 match lead.

A tightly contested fourth set saw 13 ties between the Redhawks and Bears with neither side about to pull away. Late kills from Queiroz and Kerschenbaum forced ties at 23 and 24 but Seattle U was unable to put together a run as Brown forced a fifth.

A sluggish start in the final frame saw Seattle U fall into a 3-0 hole early and were unable to recover despite pulling within two, 6-4, midway through. The Bears however continued to dictate the tempo as they led 8-4 at the turn before claiming the decisive frame 15-7 and the match.

Seattle U wraps up the Holly Young Invitational tomorrow at 7 am PT, as it faces Holy Cross.
