SEATTLE – (June 20) Seattle University volleyball head coach James Finley has announced the final two additions to his coaching staff with the hiring of Delainey Gregory and Taylor Gregory. The duo, who starred for the women’s and men’s volleyball programs, respectively, at Long Beach State, also both have professional playing experience along with their coaching backgrounds.
Delainey Gregory most recently served on the coaching staff of the Forza1 North Volleyball Club, instructing with the U17 and U18 teams. She has also worked with the Serrano High School girls team and was the head coach of the Golden West Volleyball Club.
“Delainey has been a stand out player both indoor and in the sand,” said Finley. “Her ability to take her knowledge from playing in the US and overseas and instill her volleyball IQ will help our team be more successful. She is a competitor who has high expectation.”
A four-year starter at Long Beach State from 2010-14, Gregory was named to the 2010 Big West Conference All-Freshman Team, the 2011 All-BWC Honorable Mention Team and the 2013 All-BWC First Team. Gregory also played four years of beach volleyball at LBSU and was a member of the 2013 Sand Volleyball National Champion squad, as well as the 2015 national runner-up. She earned her bachelor of science degree from LBSU in biology in 2015.
"I am so thankful to Coach Finley and Seattle U for giving me this opportunity to work at the Division I level,” said Gregory. “The team has really worked hard this past spring on creating a great culture and environment amongst themselves and the staff. I’m excited to become a part of this culture and start working with these gifted athletes. I look forward to bringing SU’s volleyball program the experience and knowledge I have gained in my years of playing as well as expanding that knowledge and learning from Coach Finley.”
Gregory went on to play for VC Wisbaden in Germany from 2015-17 where she was a two-year starter, women’s multiple player of the match awards and led her club to the 2017 bronze medal in the German Bundesliga league.
Taylor Gregory most recently served as an assistant coach for the men’s volleyball team at Golden West College, as a coach for the Team Rockstar Volleyball Club and the Director of Program Development at Peak Volleyball Academy.
“Taylor will have an immediate impact with his experience with technical and training evaluation,” Finley said. “His input with technology, film and stats along with his experience playing in the US and overseas will help our team see more and learn more in a shorter period of time.”
Gregory was a two-time All-American and three-time All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation selection while playing for Long Beach State. He led the nation in blocking in 2013 and 2015, owns multiple school blocking records and was named to U.S. Men's Junior National Team for the FIVB U21 World Championships in 2013.
“I am beyond excited at the opportunity to join Coach Finley’s staff,” Gregory said. “There is nothing I would rather be doing than following my passion of coaching at the Division I level. I look forward to sharing both my experience and knowledge of the game, but also to keep learning more right alongside our players. I cannot express how amazing it is I get to coach alongside my wife, and we are very grateful to Coach Finley and Seattle U for allowing our family to join the Redhawk family!”
Gregory went on to play professionally for Raision Loimu in Raisio, Finland in 2016-17. He graduated from LBSU with a degree in Kinesiology - Sport Psychology and Leadership in 2016.
