EDINBURG, Texas – (Nov. 15) Junior setter Shae Harris has been named the 2017 Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Setter of the Year as four total Redhawks were honored by the league Wednesday night. All awards are voted on by the WAC’s eight head coaches.
The reigning WAC Freshman of the Year, Katarina Marinkovic, was named to the 2017 All-WAC First Team, while Harris earned Second Team honors. The rookie duo of Tijana Milojevic and Anna Palmer earned All-Freshman Team honors.
Harris averaged 9.30 assists per set in WAC play, finishing with 502 total assists in 54 sets played. Her 62 assists on Oct. 21 in a 3-2 win at Utah Valley tied her career record and was the highest mark achieved in the WAC this season. She also tallied three double-doubles during WAC play.
Marinkovic, a sophomore outside hitter, averaged 3.52 kills per set during league matches. She had eight double-digit kill outputs, including four with 20 or more, while also collecting five double-doubles. She had a season-high 23 kills in the Oct. 21 win at Utah Valley, leading Seattle U to its first ever road victory over the Wolverines.
Milojevic finished WAC play ranked second in digs per set (5.15) and second in total digs (278). The true freshman recorded no less than 12 digs in a league match, had more than 20 digs six times, and tallied a career-high 33 digs in a four-set victory at Chicago State on Oct. 14.
Palmer’s roll increased during WAC play, as the rookie averaged 1.76 kills, 1.02 assists, 0.34 aces, 1.94 digs and 0.38 blocks per set in the 14 league matches. She reached double-digit kills four times and double-digit digs five times, leading to a pair of double-doubles.
The fifth-seeded Redhawks (11-16, 7-7 WAC) open WAC tournament play in Edinburg, Texas, Thursday, Nov. 16 at 4:30 p.m. CT/2:30 p.m. PT against fourth-seeded CSU Bakersfield.
