PHOENIX – (Sept. 30) Seattle University volleyball earned its first Western Athletic Conference win of the season Saturday, besting Grand Canyon University, 3-1, at GCU Arena in Phoenix.

The win moved the Redhawks to 5-11 on the season and 1-2 in WAC play, while also keeping them perfect in the all-time series against the Lopes (10-0). GCU fell to 5-11 overall and 0-4 in the WAC.

Defensive play was key for Seattle U, which held a 12.0-5.0 edge in blocks. Maja Stojanovic finished one kill shy of a double-double, collecting nine kills and a career-high 11 block assists. Katarina Marinkovic had a match-high 16 kills while adding five block assists.

Shae Harris collected 44 assists and 12 digs, while Tijana Milojevic had 25 digs for the Redhawks.

Seattle U battled from behind in the first set, coming on strong late. Trailing 18-17, they rolled off four straight points on a pair of Marinkovic kills, a block by Stojanovic and Marinkovic and a block by Stojanovic and Katarina Glavinic. They would never relinquish the lead again in a 25-22 win.

GCU would battle back to take set two, 25-20, but the Redhawks hit .452 in the third set on their way to a 25-12 win.

The fourth set would feature seven tie scores and four lead changes, but it was Seattle U to find the go-ahead points late. Trailing 23-22, Marinkovic put down her 16th kill of the match. GCU’s Teagan DeFalco committed an attack error to put SU ahead, 24-23, and Stojanovic served up an ace for match point.

The Redhawks return home to the Connolly Complex next week, hosting New Mexico State on Thursday and UTRGV on Saturday as WAC play continues.
