BERKELEY, Calif. - (Aug. 25) Seattle University volleyball opened the 2017 season with a 25-18, 12-25, 25-14, 25-22 win over Loyola-Chicago in the opening match of the Cal Molten Classic at Haas Pavilion Friday evening.

The Redhawks were led offensively by reigning Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, Katarina Marinkovic, who opened her sophomore season with 18 kills. Freshman Victoria Demmene chipped in 10 kills and nine digs for a near double-double in her first collegiate appearance.

Fellow freshman Tijana Milojevic recorded 18 digs while Shae Harris paced the attack with 35 assists.

"We had some bright moments," said Head Coach James Finley. "We got some really good play out of freshmen Victoria and Tijana, Kata (Katarina Glavinic) hit really big numbers in the middle and Kaja (Katarina Marinkovic) led us in kills. We had our ups and downs, as is usual of a first match of the season. But I really liked how we recovered, fought and played hard."

The Redhawks hit .394 in the opening set to take a 25-18 lead. They struggled to collect just seven kills with eight errors on 31 attempts in the second set, falling 25-12, but would rally back to take a 2-1 lead with a bit 25-14 win in the third.

In the fourth and final set, Seattle U rallied from a 7-4 deficit as Milojevic served on six straight Redhawk points. Seattle U would build a 15-9 lead and never relinquish it in the 25-22 win.

The Redhawks return to action at Haas Pavilion Saturday for a pair of matches. They face UC Irvine at 12:30 p.m., followed by a 7:30 p.m. first serve against host Cal.
