SEATTLE (March 23) – Seattle University softball hits the road for the Gaucho Classic this weekend. The Redhawks will play their final non-conference weekend at UC Santa Barbara.

On Friday, March 24, SU (8-19) will face San Diego at 10 a.m. and then UCSB at 12:30 p.m. the next day, the Redhawks will take on the Toreros at 9 a.m. and Santa Clara at 1:30 p.m. Seattle U wraps up the weekend with another game against Santa Clara at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Coach Geoff Hirai’s squad is coming off a 2-3 weekend at the Griz Classic in Montana. Madison Cathcart had a big showing, hitting .470 with 10 RBIs in the five games in Missoula. In 2017, Nicole Bolasky is batting .415 in 16 starts, while Paige Bouska leads SU in hits (38), runs (19), total bases (46), and triples (3). The senior needs nine hits to tie the school’s career hits record, currently held by Jane Purdy (2005-08) and Isabella Geronimo (2013-16) with 208 knocks.

USD is 12-12 this year. It went 3-2 over five home contests last week, including taking two of three from CSU Bakersfield. Taylor Spence is batting .430 with eight stolen bases to pace the Toreros, while Delaney Heller has a 4-2 record with a 3.09 ERA in 16 appearances in the circle.

UCSB has a 12-14 mark, including a pair of losses at the Loyola Marymount Tournament last weekend. The Gauchos lost to Oklahoma and LMU on March 16. Jessica Johnston leads the team with a .373 batting average and 10 doubles. Sierra Altmeyer has a team-high five home runs and 14 RBIs.

Santa Clara has posted a 7-19 mark in 2017. It went 1-5 at the Santa Clara Round Robin last weekend, beating Lehigh and losing to Grand Canyon, Long Beach State, and Northwestern twice. Geenamarie Bonilla leads the offense with a .346 batting average and a pair of homers.

Seattle U dropped an 8-1 decision to San Diego on Feb. 12 in Arizona. Santa Clara took outings with the Redhawks the following weekend in California.
