DAVIS, Calif. – Seattle University softball walked off with a 6-5 eight-inning win against UTEP at the Aggie Invitational Saturday. SU dropped a 3-1 game at UC Davis in its nightcap.

The Redhawks (7-6) and UTEP were even at 5 through seven innings. Carley Nance stepped into the circle after the Miners had a runner placed at second base. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner up a base. Nance then picked up a strikeout and a groundball to third to keep the game tied.

Olivia Viggiano was placed at second for the bottom of the eighth. Ally Choate then walked. A Madison Cathcart flyout allowed the runners to advance a base. On Bailey Thompson’s groundball to second, Viggiano took off. The freshman slid in safely ahead of the throw home, lifting the Redhawks to the walk-off victory.

Shianne Smith pitched a 1-2-3 first to start the day. In the bottom of the first, Viggiano led off with a single. After a fielder’s choice, Cathcart walked. Thompson reached on an error to load the bases for Kaylee Ree. The senior came through with a two-run single to right, giving SU a 2-0 lead. Nance followed with a base hit to bring in Thompson for a 3-0 difference.

UTEP put up two runs in the third and then three more in the top of the fourth, taking a 5-3 advantage. Breanna Timmons started the bottom of the fourth with a base hit. Alyson Matriotti tripled down the rightfield line to plate Timmons. Viggiano tied the contest with an RBI groundout.

Nance was on point in relief from there, holding UTEP to just one hit the rest of the game to claim the victory.

Matriotti went 3-3 with an RBI and a run. Viggiano and Nance recorded two hits apiece. Nance threw five innings of relief, giving up one hit and striking out five batters.

Facing the host Aggies for the second time in two days, SU found itself in another pitcher’s duel. Andie Larkins got the start for the Redhawks and performed well, going five innings and striking out five. She gave up two earned rund and five hits.

Seattle U struck first, as Viggiano singled to begin the game. Cathcart drew a one-out walk and then Viggiano stole third. Ree brought in Viggiano with a base hit to right.

UC Davis answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame and then added an insurance run in the third. Brooke Yanez held down the SU offense, pitching a complete game.

SU will play its final two games at the 2019 Aggie Invitational tomorrow. It faces Idaho State at 9 a.m. and then Saint Mary’s at 11 a.m. to conclude its weekend.
