SEATTLE – Seattle University women’s soccer returned to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship Game for the seventh straight year, as Lauren Brown scored in the 76th minute to lift SU past UTRGV, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at Championship Field.
Seattle U (11-7-2), the WAC regular-season champion, controlled much of the action on Friday, holding an 18-9 advantage in shots on the day. The Vaquero defense withstood pressure, though, forcing SU to dig deep to find a go-ahead goal.
The Redhawks built towards a goal as the second half continued, holding possession and working passes around and through the UTRGV defense. Finally, SU broke through on a corner kick in the 76th minute. Rachel Bowler sent in a ball to the far side of the goal, where Bailey Hall sent the ball back into the box. The ball went close to goal, where Michele Adam back-heeled a shot that was redirected by a Vaquero defender to Brown, who one-touched a left-footed shot into the open net for a 1-0 lead.
Madison Waguespack and the Redhawk backline took over from there, turning away any and all UTRGV chances, including a header in the final minute. Waguespack made three saves for her sixth shutout of the year.
SU has now made seven straight appearances in the WAC Championship Game, marking the longest current streak by a Division I program.
The Redhawks will face second-seeded Utah Valley on Sunday. The championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Championship Field. SU will look for its fifth WAC Tournament crown.
