SEATTLE - A flurry of shots at the end of regulation came just short as Seattle University women’s soccer suffered a 1-0 defeat to Loyola Marymount Thursday in the Redhawks’ last non-conference match at Championship Field.
Freshman goalkeeper Madison Waguespack recorded four saves on the afternoon and anchored an overall steady back line that faced 11 LMU shots.
Seattle U (4-5-1) had chances in a very open first half. A ball was played out wide to the streaking Ava Benedetti, who tested the LMU keeper with a left-footed strike, forcing a save out of the opposition.
The Lions found the back of the net just before the halftime whistle after a testy battle in the midfield. The visitors rode out the one-goal advantage for the last 45 minutes to secure the 1-0 victory.
The Redhawks’ depth came into play in the second half with five freshmen seeing playing time off the bench, combining for two shots and providing attacking opportunities in the final ten minutes that worked the LMU backline.
Prior to the match, Seattle U honored the 2018 WAC Championship team with an on-field ring presentation ceremony.
Seattle U wraps up non-conference action this Sunday at Cal Poly with kick-off inked at 12:00 pm.
