Kara Kuttler (Redmond, Wash.) earned a goal and an assist and Madison Goverde (Snohomish, Wash.) picked up six saves to help the Seattle University women’s soccer team defeat the University of San Francisco, 2-1, Friday evening at Negoesco Stadium.

Seattle University jumped on the board midway through the first half as Kuttler fed the ball to Jamie Coe (Duvall, Wash.), who collided with USF goalie Kelly Pohle but recovered quickly and pushed the ball into the right corner of the net. It was Coe’s team-leading sixth goal of the season, while Kuttler earned her third assist of the year.

After both Pohle and Goverde made three saves each in the first 14 minutes of the second half, the Redhawks added an insurance goal as Kuttler, a victim of two of those saves, sent a shot from eight feet out into the left corner of the net for her third goal of the year. Seattle University kept the pressure on, as Coe and Kuttler each took shots in the next ten minutes to help the visitors earn a 15-9 shot advantage.

San Francisco (5-6-2) would break the shutout as Alyssa Simbahon sent a corner kick to Lauren Maris, who touched it towards Molly Hall. Hall’s header sailed into the upper left corner of the net to cut the Redhawk advantage in half. USF had one chance to tie the match, but a shot buy Katherine Kimure with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation was stopped by Goverde.

Seattle University (7-2-3) extended its winning streak to four matches, scoring two goals in each of those contests. Kuttler became the first Seattle University player to earn a goal and an assist in the same match this season, while Goverde’s six saves was the second-highest total by the freshman goalie this year. Pohle made eight saves for the Dons, who were playing their final non-conference match of the season.

Seattle University heads to the Dakotas next weekend, facing Summit League schools South Dakota State on Thursday, Oct. 16 and North Dakota State on Saturday, Oct. 18. After a trip to Utah the next weekend, the Redhawks host Cal State Bakersfield on Halloween, Oct. 31, beginning at 2 p.m. at Championship Field.
