SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Seattle University women’s soccer led late at Cal Poly, but the Mustangs scored to force overtime and then converted on a penalty kick in extra time to claim SU’s non-conference finale on Sunday afternoon. Leahi Manthei scored for the Redhawks.
SU (4-5-1) started slowly in the first half, but Madison Waguespack and the SU defense kept the match scoreless. Waguespack notched four saves in the first 45 minutes as the contest headed to the second half even at 0.
In the second half, the Redhawks created more pressure offensively, peppering the Cal Poly back line early in the frame. Midway through the half, Jessie Ray dribbled down the right side and dished to Manthei, who beat the Mustang keeper for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 Redhawk advantage.
SU kept testing the defense, but Cal Poly did not break. The Mustangs eventually scored on a free kick in the closing minutes and then found the winner on a penalty kick in OT.
Waguespack tallied six stops on the day.
The Redhawks play at Chicago State in the 2019 WAC opener on Friday, Oct. 4.
