BOX SCORE

SEATTLE – (Sept. 11) Seattle University women’s soccer outshot Santa Clara, but fell, 4-1, on Monday afternoon at Championship Field. Jessie Ray scored her fourth goal of the season in the game.

“I was proud of the opportunities we created in the first half,” said Coach Julie Woodward. “Going into the second half, it was our goal to not give up another goal and we did that. In a game like this, it’s important to remain consistent in your effort.”

Seattle U tested the Broncos, who advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in last year’s NCAA Tournament, scoring in the second half after pushing the action in the first frame. After earning a corner kick in the 57th minute, the ball settled at the feet of Olivia Ovenell. From outside of the box, she sent a ball arching over the traffic and found Ray, who headed the ball over the Santa Clara goalkeeper and into the net.

On the day, SU held a 14-12 advantage in shots.

The Broncos scored four times in the first half, as Leahi Manthei hit the post and Mackenzie Curry made a pair of saves. The Redhawks continued to work in the second half, outshooting the visitors and allowing a number of reserves to see time. Ashley Routh played the second half in goal, making a save and keeping the Broncos off the scoreboard.

SU plays at Washington on Friday, Sept. 15. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at UW.
