HOMESTAND CONTINUES: With the March 1 game at Portland postponed, Seattle U will continue to enjoy home-field advantage when the Redhawks host Oakland University over the weekend at Bannerwood Park. Seattle U brings a five-game winning streak into the weekend thanks to a team batting average close to .300 and an earned run average under 2.00.
LAST WEEKEND: Seattle University swept Bowling Green to extend its winning streak to five games, plus it gave the Redhawks their first four-game sweep over an opponent since returning to intercollegiate action in 2010. The Redhawks outscored the Falcons 26-3, collecting 44 hits while holding Bowling Green to 17 hits as Seattle U earned three shutouts over the weekend. Sean Sutton led the way with a .667 batting average (8-for-12). The offense combined for a .355 batting average, while the pitching staff produced a 0.26 earned run average.
STRIKEOUT MACHINE: Sophomore Tarik Skubal earned WAC Pitcher of the Week honors this past Monday after his second straight stellar performance to start the 2016 season. Against Bowling Green on Saturday, Skubal allowed just two hits in six innings of work, striking out 10 batters without walking anybody. After the first two weekends of the college baseball season, Skubal leads the country in strikeout-to-walk ratio (23.00), is tied for the lead in earned run average (0.00), and is second in Division I in total strikeouts (23).
HITTING MACHINE: Sean Sutton, a sophomore infielder, was named the WAC Hitter of the Week on Feb. 29 after batting .667 (8-for-12) against Bowling Green with two doubles, two runs scored, three RBI, and four walks. In the series opener, he was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate and followed that up by going 4-for-6 in Saturday’s doubleheader. For the season, he is currently second in the WAC in batting average (.478), third in total bases (17) and fourth in hits (11).
REDHAWK LEADERS: After two weekends, Sean Sutton leads the team with 11 hits and three doubles, plus he is tied with Griffin Andreychuk with six RBI apiece. Sheldon Stober has scored six runs, Michael McCann has drawn a team-high nine walks, and Dalton Hurd leads the way with four stolen bases. On the mound, Tarik Skubal leads the way with 13 innings pitched, two wins, a 0.00 ERA, 23 strikeouts, and a .119 opponent batting average.
SCOUTING OAKLAND: The Golden Grizzlies enter the weekend with a 3-5 overall record. They have spent the entire season along the Pacific Coast, first playing Pepperdine and Fresno State before splitting a four-game series at Portland last weekend. As a team, Oakland has compiled a .257 batting average, a .939 fielding percentage, and a 5.24 earned run average. Myles Zilinsky leads the team with a .360 batting average, while Ben Hart and Mike Brosseau have earned a team-high 11 hits apiece. Matt DiLeo is one of five Oakland players with a home run, plus he has driven in eight runs. Jake Lee is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, allowing just five hits and two walks in nine innings of work. Joe Buchalski has struck out 13 opposing batters in 10 innings on the mound. These will be the first baseball games all-time between Seattle University and Oakland University.
