After the first seven innings were relatively quiet, both teams put runs on the board in the eighth inning, but Seattle University outscored UC Davis in that inning to hold on for a 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
Down 1-0, Trent Oleszczuk (Beaverton, Ore.) led off the eighth inning with a single, and Ryan Somers (Sammamish, Wash.) was able to reach base while attempting a sacrifice bunt when Anthony Kupbens made a throwing error. After a pitching change, Michael Tevlin (Billings, Mont.) laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third.
Bryndon Ecklund (Elma, Wash.) singled to drive in Oleszczuk, and Riley Tompkins (Lynnwood, Wash.) followed with a single that scored Somers to put the Redhawks ahead, 2-1. Harry Stanwyck attempted to pick off Ecklund at second, but no one was covering the base, so Ecklund and Tompkins advanced one base, and Nate Roberts (Silverdale, Wash.) drove them both in to extend Seattle U's lead to 4-1.
UC Davis (7-8) struck back in the bottom of the eighth, as pinch hitters Evan Wolf and Nick Lynch reached base via a walk and being hit by a pitch. Mike Mazzara, another pinch hitter, sent a double into the right-center field gap, scoring Wolf and Lynch to close the Aggies' deficit to 4-3. Evan Heptig's grounder to shortstop was thrown away by Nick Latta (Tacoma, Wash.), but Doug Kincaid (Portland, Ore.) hit cutoff man Tompkins, who threw out pinch runner John Williams attempting to score.
Grant Gunning (Snohomish, Wash.) gave Seattle U a solid starting performance, allowing six hits, one walk, and one unearned run in 6 1/3 innings of work, striking out two batters. Garrett Anderson (Kennewick, Wash.) came on in relief in the seventh inning and pitched the rest of the game to earn his second victory of the week.
Ecklund was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in, while Roberts was 3-for-4 with a stolen base and two RBI and Oleszczuk was 2-for-5 with a run scored in the game. Kevin Barker went 2-for-4 at the top of the UC Davis order, while Scott Kalush collected two hits in three official at-bats.
Seattle University (9-6) will send Seafth Howe (Seattle, Wash.) to the mound for the rubber game against UC Davis Sunday, March 11, starting at 12 noon. The Redhawks are then scheduled to host UConn at Bannerwood Stadium Monday, March 12, beginning at 4 p.m.
