Dave Wainhouse, a former major league pitcher who spent some time with the Seattle Mariners organization, has been hired by new head baseball coach Donny Harrel as the pitching coach for Seattle University.

Wainhouse enjoyed a solid collegiate career at Washington State under legendary coach Bobo Brayton from 1986-1988, culminating in a senior year in which he went 7-0 with six saves and a 3.90 ERA in helping the team earn its second consecutive Pac-10 North title and NCAA Tournament berth. He pitched for the Canadian Olympic Team during the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.

A first round selection by the Montreal Expos in the 1988 draft, Wainhouse played professional baseball until 2001, seeing time with the Expos, Seattle Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies, and St. Louis Cardinals. Wainhouse played under several legendary managers such as Jim Leyland, Felipe Alou, Tony LaRussa, and Lou Pinella.

“I am excited to be a part of the start of this program and I am looking forward to bringing Seattle University baseball back to the level it was at many years ago,” Wainhouse said.

Since retiring from pro baseball, Wainhouse has worked with many youth baseball players in the Seattle area, and he has previously coached a summer team for 18-year-olds. He will immediately help Harrel in the recruitment of pitchers to Seattle University as they get ready to rebuild the baseball program in time for the 2009-10 academic year.

“Hiring Dave Wainhouse is a huge boost for our baseball program. To have a guy with big league experience who knows what it takes to play at the ultimate level will help us attract talented pitchers,” said Harrel. “Dave has done a great job in our region producing Division I pitchers and has great relationships with many of the baseball people in our community. He is a quality human being and has great family support. Dave will be a great mentor for our student-athletes coming to SU and will help get us ready to compete right away in 2010.”

The Seattle University baseball program will join the rest of the athletic department in the reclassification process towards Division I and will play its first competitive season in the spring of 2010.
