EDINBURG, Texas – Seattle University men’s soccer scored late to tally a 1-0 win at UTRGV Sunday. James Morris converted a penalty kick in the 81st minute as the Redhawks stayed unbeaten in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play and extended their unbeaten streak to 11 straight matches.
“This is a tough trip and we came away with two shutouts,” said Coach Pete Fewing.
The hosts played conservatively in the first half, content to pass the ball around their end for stretches of time. SU (12-3-3, 9-0-1 WAC) worked gain possession and both sides ended up with a couple chances. The defenses stood tall, though, as the match went to halftime even at 0.
The sluggish pace continued in the second half, with neither offense mustering much in the way of dangerous opportunities. In the 81st minute, Declan McGlynn was taken down at the edge of the penalty box, earning a penalty kick for SU. Morris slammed a liner into the back of the net to make it 1-0. The Redhawks held the Vaqueros without a shot as time ran out and Seattle U claimed its ninth shutout of the year.
Morris notched his seventh goal of 2019, while Akili Kasim made a pair of saves for the clean sheet.
The Redhawks return home for senior day on Saturday, Nov. 9, as San Jose State visits Championship Field. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. for the WAC regular-season finale.
