SEATTLE — The Seattle U volleyball team stumbled on Monday falling in three-straight sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-23) against California Baptist on Monday at the Redhawk Center.
Eve Kirschenbaum led the Redhawk (10-11, 1-6 WAC) with a match-best 11 kills behind a .333-clip. Rachel Stark was dig kill shy of the double-double as she finished with 10 digs. Lauren McCabe chipped in seven kills, while Johnasia Carr, Julia Queiroz and Sofia Sanchez each had five.
Seattle U hit .197 in the match trailing the Lancers’ mark of .279, but held a 43-41 edge in kills and narrow 5-4 margin in service aces.
The Redhawks return to action on Saturday, Oct. 19 as they begin a three-match road swing, beginning with a visit to Utah Valley. First serve against the Wolverines is slated for 11 am PT.
Kurokawa and Milojevic each tallied an ace early in the first as Seattle U took a 6-4 lead. Stark then added a kill to cap off a 3-0 spurt pushing the score to 9-5. CBU though battled back with a 5-1 run pull even at 10-all, before forcing ties again at 11 and 12. SU then committed a bevy ff attack errors allowing the Lancers to put together 7-1 rally and move out to a 19-14 advantage. Sanchez and Stark then tallied back-to-back kills while Kurokawa and Queiroz registered an assisted block as part of the 3-0 spurt, trimming the deficit the 19-17. That however was the closest Seattle U came as CBU cameback with a 3-0 rally of its own en route to winning the set, 25-19.
McCabe opened the second with consecutive assisted blocks helping the Redhawks to a 3-0 advantage early. The margin however was short-lived as CBU pulled even at 5-5. The Lancers would then score five-unanswered to claim a 10-6 lead. Seattle U though began to battle as consecutive kills from Stark made it 11-9. McCabe and Kerschenbaum then later added to the cause pulling the Redhawks within one, 13-12. The deficit then evaporated behind a 5-0 run which included back-to-back aces from Milojevic, as SU took a 17-14 advantage. CBU however answered late, stringing together a 6-0 run to assume a 22-19 lead. CBU won the second, 25-20.
Trailing 9-7 in the third, Seattle U went on 4-1 spurt for an 11-10 lead as Carr and McCabe added kills while Milojevic added her fourth ace of the night. The Lancers forced ties at 11-11 and 12-12 but the Redhawks maintained their advantage with back-to-back tallies from Queiroz, pushing the score to 15-12. CBU then drew even at 15 and 17 before using back-to-back strikes to claim 19-18 lead. A heavy swing by Carr tied the score at 19, but a SU service error and timely block by the Lancers nudged them out front, 21-19. The Redhawks continued to linger as Kerschebaum, Stark and Queiroz added kills down the stretch but the effort fell short as CBU took the third, 25-23.
