CHENEY, WASH. – Riding high off their victory on Friday, Seattle U women’s tennis battled hard against Eastern Washington the next day but ultimately fell, 6-1, to the Eagles.
Freshman Martina Asciuto defeated Eastern Washington’s Stephanie Broussard 6-4, 7-5 to nab the Redhawks’ only point, while sophomore Kyra Jung took her match down to the wire before eventually losing 4-6, 10-12. In the #3 singles spot, freshman Alisa Sabotic just barely lost 4-6, 6-7 in an incredibly close battle. Freshman Jillian Rasmussen also fought hard, but was unable to hold out in a final match score of 3-6, 3-6. Senior Lily-Ana Kreutzer and sophomore Hannah Gianan both posted match scores of 2-6, 0-6 in singles play.
In doubles, Seattle U’s furious attack was not enough to stave off Eastern Washington. Gianan and Jung took their match to a 3-6 finish, and Asciuto, paired with freshman Hannah Grossman, was unable to replicate her singles success as the duo fell, 2-6. The third team, composed of Kreutzer and Rasmussen, had their match end with a 3-5 final score.
"This is a difficult match to assess, because there were so many positive aspects," said Head Coach Joey Barnes. "Martina stayed extremely focused all day - her determination and positivity was able to net her the win. Kyra fought hard in her match and almost took the second set. Overall, I feel that our team really tried hard.
"I know they are still getting used to my way of coaching and finding their own self-confidence," he continued. "They are a great bunch of young ladies that I truly believe will continue to show good results."
The Redhawks will close out the weekend with a matchup against Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston, Idaho, at 11:00 AM on Sunday, Feb. 3.
