Women's Tennis Sees Success in Day 2 of Cougar Classic

Pullman, Wash. - 

The Seattle U women’s tennis team saw success Saturday, advancing seven individuals or doubles pairs in their respective brackets during day two of the 2012 Cougar Classic, held at the Cougar Outdoor Courts in Pullman, Wash.

Natalie Martin (Phoenix, Ariz) claimed the biggest margin of victory for the Redhawks, defeating Eastern Washington’s Alyssa Nagain in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. With the win, Martin advances into the fourth round of Flight 2’s consolation bracket. 

Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) also won in Flight 2’s consolation bracket, defeating Eastern Washington’s Nocio Norena 6-3, 6-0 in a round two matchup. Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas) rounded out the Redhawks’ Flight 2 lineup by falling in the second round to Haley Driver of Montana, 6-0, 6-1.

In Flight 1, Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) and Gonzaga’s Prue Teitzel traded set victories in first two sets before Lambert won a tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 to move onto round three of the consolation bracket. Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) also came out a winner in the bracket, defeating Portland’s Tori Trosech 6-4, 6-7, 10-4 in the second round as well.

Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) nearly won her Flight 1 consolation match, falling to Isabelle Klingert  of Gonzaga in a tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-2, 10-5, while Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) fell 6-0, 6-2 to Sasha Carter of Montana.

In Flight 3’s consolation bracket, Dayna Bennett took Fiona Mok of Boise State to a third-set tiebreaker before ultimately falling 3-6, 6-3, 10-7. She bounced back, however, and needed just two sets to earn her first individual win as a Redhawk by beating Kaytlin Nelson of Lewis-Clark State 6-3, 6-0.

Four Seattle U doubles teams took the court Saturday, two of them coming away victorious. Wurden and James teamed up to take down Eastern Washington’s duo of Knight and Werner 8-6 in the Flight 1 consolation round, while Lambert and Bennett claimed an 8-3 win over Lewis-Clark State’s Oliveira and Human in a consolation match of Flight 2. Also in Flight 2’s consolation bracket, Rachel McCarthy and Martin fell to Lopez and Crum of Montana State 8-0, while Weissmann and Newman lost a Flight 1 consolation match 8-1 to Chong and Blaske of Lewis-Clark State.

The Redhawks conclude play at the 2012 Cougar Classic Sunday, Sept. 15. Matches begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Cougar Outdoor Tennis Courts in Pullman.
