SEATTLE – In their first outdoor meet of the season, Seattle U track and field established themselves as one of the premier programs competing in the Doris Heritage Track Festival, which was hosted by Seattle Pacific at West Seattle Stadium. The Redhawks posted 25 top-five finishes and 29 personal bests, with the women finishing in fifth place as a team and the men earning fourth place in the field.
For the women, junior Siobhan Rubio (2:15.13) and Ellie Postma (2:18.43) starred in the 800m run, respectively earning second and fifth place. Sophomore Michaela Moore earned top finishes in two events: the 100m dash (fifth-place 12.73) and the 200m dash (fourth-place 26.28). She was joined in the 200m by freshman Regie Grady, whose time of 26.42 earned her fifth place and was a personal record. In the 5k run, sophomore Elle Stein (18:13.40) came in fourth place and beat her old personal best time by over 26 seconds, while classmate Rachel Kastama ran her own PR of 18:16.88, good for fifth place overall. Meanwhile, all of the Redhawks competing in the 1500m run had solid performances: junior Anastasia Honea, competing for the first time this season, crossed the finish line at 4:51.64, followed closely by junior Shannan Higgins at 4:55.29. Juniors Emily O’Hara (4:58.77) and Thea Foulk (5:04.25), along with sophomore Megan Delorey (5:03.71) and unattached freshman Abby Smith (5:17.19) all ran personal bests in the event.
Junior Michelle Newblom placed third overall in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.59, and later finished in second place with junior Renee Soliman, Grady and Moore in the 4x100m relay at 49.66. Soliman also posted a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.14m, while sophomore Nicole Golba (10.59m) earned fifth place in the triple jump. Finally, Seattle U’s throwers had a great day, with freshmen Tallia Sova (11.30m) and Sylvia Hendrix (10.52m) taking second and fifth in the shot put, respectively; Hendrix’s mark was a personal best in the event. Both Sova (25.86m) and freshman Jami Tresselt (34.09m) had PR’s in the hammer throw, and all three Redhawk javelin throwers (freshman Nicole Whittern, Sova and sophomore Jamie Hegg), added their scores to the hefty PR list with 38.88m, 32.33m and 28.74m, respectively. For these three, Saturday marked the first time that they had competed in the event.
The men impressed just as much as the women, starting with freshman Stewart Keene’s spectacular first-place finish in the 800m run with a time of 1:56.17. He was joined among the top finishers by classmate Ansel Pendley-Griffin, whose mark of 2:00.77 was good for fifth place in the field. Freshman Isaiah Payne continued to show off his sprinting skills, taking second place in the 100m dash (11.04, a personal record) and fifth in the 200m dash (22.21). In the latter event, freshman Zach Gonzalez (23.58), junior Kailan Claiborne (23.66) and freshman Brant Yamamoto (23.96) all ran personal bests.
The Redhawks also shone in the 1500m run, with senior Jacques Hebert winning second place at 3:55.96 and sophomore Nathan Pixler finishing right on his heels with a third-place (and personal-best) 3:56.13. Senior Ben Monk finished just outside the top five with a PR of 3:59.70. In the 5k run, senior Cal Davidson-Turner, Seattle U’s only competitor, took fourth place at 15:12.22. Junior Steve Brown (56.90) took third in the 400m hurdles, followed by freshman Lucas Milne’s fifth-place time of 57.82. The 4x100 relay team, consisting of senior Alexandro Carrasco, Milne, Claiborne and Payne finished in second place with a combined time of 42.92 seconds. Finally, junior Kailan Claiborne earned a third-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 12.88m.
After such a successful meet, the Redhawks hope to improve further in their next event. The Mike Fanelli Track Classic will be held in Hayward, Calif., on March 28-30.
