Women’s
Soccer Teams have been announced, and Seattle University’s Stephanie Verdoia (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Renee Vandermause (Madison, Wisc.) have been named to the Second
Team, NCAA Division I District VIII.
This honor recognizes top student-athletes for both their
performances on the field and in the classroom. The
country is divided into eight districts and District VIII spans eight states,
including Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and
Washington, as well as Canada. Half of the student-athletes on the NCAA
Division I Second Team from District VIII are from schools in the state of Washington.
As a sophomore, Verdoia currently leads the Redhawks in
goals (8), points (17), shots (49), and game-winning goals (3) through the 2012
regular season. She recorded the team’s third hat trick of the season in a 5-1
win over Idaho in Seattle U’s first home conference match this year. For the
performance, she was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of
the Week for the week of Oct. 1-7. Off the field, she currently has a 3.96
cumulative GPA and is majoring in political science.
Vandermause, a redshirt senior, walked at graduation in
June 2012 but returned to the field this season to help lead the Redhawks in
their first year in the WAC. She started all 18 games through the 2012 regular
season, and has been an anchor in the Seattle U defense. She has started 41
career games through the 2012 regular season, including every game of 2011 and
2012 thus far. Off the field, she is very involved with Professionals Without
Borders, with which she’s done service projects in Nicaragua, Zambia, and more.
In the classroom, she has a 3.51 cumulative GPA in civil engineering.
This is the first NCAA Division I All-District honor for
the Redhawks since reclassifying to NCAA Division I. The last All-District
honor for Seattle U women’s soccer was in 2010 when Lauren Munechika was named
to the All-District Third Team, University Division District VIII.
Seattle U takes on Louisiana Tech in the first round of
the Western Athletic Conference tournament starting at approximately 1:30 p.m.
PT. The winner will advance to face Utah State at 1:30 p.m. PT on Friday, Nov.
2. The championship game will take place at 12 p.m. PT on Sunday, Nov. 4. All
five matches will be video streamed on www.WAC.tv
for a one-time fee of $10.95. Live stats will be available for the SU matches
