The Seattle University women's swim team put forth some solid performances, but those were not enough as the Nevada Wolf Pack earned a 130-75 victory Saturday afternoon at the Lombardi Pool.
Once again, Seattle U came through in the breaststroke event, finishing 1-2-3 in the 200 breaststroke. Alexis Morehouse (Vancouver, Wash.) won the event comfortably with a time of 2:22.88, followed by teammates Kevlyn Richards (Gig Harbor, Wash.) in 2:26.18 and Karla Ruff (Seattle, Wash.) in 2:27.64.
Ruff earned the Redhawks' other event victory of the day, finishing first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:59.45. Morehouse finished third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.41, while Richards swam the second leg of the meet-opening 200 medley relay, joining with Tina Nguyen (Hillsboro, Ore.), Megan Kelley (Las Vegas, Nev.), and Nicole Doi (Pleasanton, Calif.) to finish second in that event with a time of 1:51.10.
Doi posted an in-season best in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.96 seconds to finish in second place by just 1/100th of a second. Kelley finished second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:12.22, while Nguyen finished third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:01.55, just ahead of teammate Hanna Basler (El Cajon, Calif.) in 2:01.74. Basler also finished second in the 100 freestyle by only 2/10ths of a second with a time of 54.22 seconds.
Marina Pomar-Enders (Mill Creek, Wash.) finished third in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:53.06, while Rachel Leighter (Eugene, Ore.) touched the wall second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:13.05. In the final event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay, the Redhawk quartet of Basler, Melissa Randolf (Everett, Wash.), Doi, and Tessa Franke (Santa Monica, Calif.) finished second with a time of 3:43.35.
"As we are beginning our taper, I expected the swimmers to be a little sluggish today. But they went after it, fought through each event, and had some good swims," Seattle U head coach Craig Nisgor said. "I especially liked our performance in the 200 breaststroke, as well as Nicole's effort in the 50 free. Now we prepare for the conference meet in less than three weeks."
The Seattle University swim teams head to Monterey Park, Calif., for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Swimming Championships, to be held at East Los Angeles College Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 15-18.
