PHOENIX – (May 7) A late rally had Seattle University baseball eying a series upset of Western Athletic Conference leader Grand Canyon Sunday afternoon at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix. But despite putting together a five-run ninth, the Redhawks could not battle all the way back, falling 9-6 in the series finale.

Seattle U drops to 16-28-1 on the season and 6-12 in WAC play while the Lopes move to 24-22 overall and 18-3 in league outings.

Connor Moore (2-2) took the loss on the mound for the Redhawks, giving up nine hits and two walks for seven runs. He also struck out three in his 4.2 innings.

The Lopes' big inning was the fifth, as they opened up a 3-1 advantage into a 7-1 lead with four runs in the frame.

Seattle U first got on the board in the top of the fifth courtesy a leadoff solo home run by Sean Sutton.

Trailing 9-1 headed into the top of the ninth, the Redhawks put together a big rally off of GCU reliever Mick Vorhof. Two walks and a Chase Wells single quickly loaded the bases. Following a Max Modeste strikeout, Kyler Murphy singled down the left field line to send one run home. Griffin Andreychuk drew a bases loaded walk and Austin Lively earned an RBI on a fielder's choice to second.

Aaron Stroosma kept the rally going with a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle, but Vorhof would get Curtis Perrin to ground out for the final out of the game.

Andreychuk, who has now hit safely in eight of the last nine games, collected the 207th of his career and is now five shy of the SU all-time record.

The Redhawks travel to face cross-town rival Washington on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before embarking on their final WAC road trip of the season, a three-game set at CSU Bakersfield May 12-14.
