PORTLAND, Ore. — The Seattle U volleyball team stumbled on Tuesday, falling to Portland, 3-2, in exhibition action. The Redhawks took the first set, 27-25, before dropping the next three frames 25-18, 25-10, 25-17. Per NCAA exhibition regulations, a fifth set was played which saw Seattle U bounce back, 15-11.
Collectively, the Redhawks posted a .078 hitting mark with 33 kills on 115 attempts with junior newcomer Sam Hayward pacing the offense with a team-best 10 kills while adding three aces.
Julia Queiroz followed Hayward with seven kills as she presented a well-rounded effort at the net with sophomore also adding five blocks, including a solo stop to her stat line.
Tijana Milojevic held the backline as the junior libero registered a match-best 15 digs.
Freshmen Lauren McCabe and Amaris Carter also made notable contributions in their first glimpse of collegiate action with McCabe posting four blocks and three kills, while Carter tallied four kills and an ace.
The Portland offense meanwhile was effective as it amassed 51 kills and hit .294 for the match. Three Pilots notched double-digit kills including Shayla Hoeft who led all players with 12 kills behind a .455 hitting mark.
The Redhawks will return to action on Friday, Aug. 30 when they officially open the 2019 campaign against Southern Miss at the Denver Classic.
