SUZY BARCOMB PRESS CONFERENCE

DENVER – Kamira Sanders of Seattle University women’s basketball has been voted to the 2018-19 All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Preseason Team by both coaches and media, according to a release from the conference Wednesday. The Redhawks were picked third in the preseason poll from both entities.

In the coaches’ poll, New Mexico State was named the preseason favorite after winning its fourth straight regular-season title last year. It picked up seven first-place votes. CSU Bakersfield claimed the other two first-place nods for second place. SU was third, with Grand Canyon next. Kansas City and UTRGV tied for fifth, while new WAC member California Baptist was seventh. Utah Valley and Chicago State rounded out the rankings.

"I think the polls are pretty spot-on with the placement of the teams," said Coach Suzy Barcomb. "Clearly, New Mexico State has the most talent returning this season."

Sanders was chosen Preseason All-WAC First Team, joining NM State’s Brooke Salas and Gia Pack, Kristen Moore of Kansas City, and CSU Bakersfield’s Alexxus Gilbert. Salas was picked as Preseason Player of the Year.

"Kamira finished the season on an incredibly high note," said Barcomb, entering her third season at SU. "Her play during the WAC Tournament was one of the key reasons we were able to prevail."

The media poll saw the Aggies on top, with Bakersfield next. Seattle U was third with GCU behind. Kansas City and UVU tied for fifth, while UTRGV, CBU, and Chicago State closing out the poll.

Sanders, Salas, Pack, and Moore were also on the media’s First Team, while JJ Johnson from CSUB replaced Gilbert as the fifth member.

Last season, SU won its first-ever WAC Tournament championship, beating CSU Bakersfield in the title game in Las Vegas. Barcomb's squad returns Sanders, the 2018 WAC Tournament MVP, along with key contributors Madeline Dopplick, McKenzi Williams, and Joana Alves

The Redhawks open the new season with an exhibition against Northwest on Nov. 2 at the Redhawk Center. They begin the regular campaign on Nov. 6, as Cal State Fullerton visits campus.
