WAC RELEASE

DENVER – (August 7) Seattle University women’s soccer has been voted to finish third in the 2018 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the league announced Wednesday. Defenders Hannah Carrothers and Rachel Bowler were named to the Preseason All-WAC Team.

Kansas City, the 2017 WAC regular-season champion, was named the preseason favorite, earning five first-place votes. Utah Valley was picked second, claiming the other four first-place nods after winning the 2017 WAC Tournament.

Seattle U was next in the poll. Grand Canyon and UTRGV rounded out the top five. New Mexico State and CSU Bakersfield were voted sixth and seventh, respectively. New WAC member California Baptist took eighth in the rankings, with Chicago State chosen ninth.

Carrothers was a 2017 All-WAC Second Team choice after helping the SU defense record a 569-minute scoreless streak late in the season. The native of Tsawwassen, British Columbia, dished out five assists from her position as a pressing left back. She enters her senior season as a tri-captain for the Redhawks.

Bowler, a junior from Honolulu, made 18 starts at right back last year. She was key in Seattle U’s defensive surge to close the 2017 campaign. Bowler added a pair of assists to spark the SU attack.

Lexie Howard and Abby Small of Kansas City were voted WAC Preseason Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively.

Seattle U will host a pair of exhibition games this week to open its 2018 schedule. The Redhawks welcome Highline College on Thursday for a 7 p.m. game and then take on Trinity Western on Saturday at 6 p.m. Admission for both games at Championship Field is free.

SU begins its regular season on Friday, Aug. 17, as it travels to Washington State.
