SEATTLE - Seattle University women's soccer held off British Columbia, 3-2, in an exhibition match Sunday afternoon at Championship Field. Lauren Brown, Paige Malm, and Kelsey Vogel each scored in under four minutes late in the first half in the victory.
"It was exciting to see so many players get into the game," said Coach Julie Woodward. "I was impressed with how the team responded after falling behind early in the game. A lot of our new players added value today and we scored three great goals. We'll keep working to get ready for the home opener."
The visitors scored in game's opening seconds, but SU gradually gained control of the contest and then exploded with three goals in a span of 3:56. In the 36th minute, Gabe Jillings found a streaking Brown, who finished off the post to even the score.
Less than three minutes later, Jessie Ray set up the go-ahead score. The senior earned possession and moved downfield, passing to Malm, who scored in the 39th minutes for a 2-1 advantage.
Ray was then taken down in the penalty box, earning a penalty kick for her side. Vogel found the back of the net on the left side, making it 3-1 late in the half.
The Thunderbirds answered with a goal early in the second frame, but Seattle U maintained pressure and sent away all UBC threats as time ran out.
Madison Waguespack and Mackenzie Curry shared time in goal, with each making a save. Overall, 25 Redhawks made an appearance in the contest.
SU begins the regular season on Thursday, Aug. 22, as Washington State visits Championship Field. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
