SEATTLE – Head Coach Kelly Sullivan has announced the addition of 15 student-athletes who will join the Seattle U Track & Field and Cross Country programs beginning in the fall of 2019. The class includes six women and nine men.
"This class of 15 represents a young talented group of freshman along with two outstanding transfers," said Sullivan. "You combine these 15 together with the 55 returnees we have coming back and we have a lot to be excited about going into the 2019-20 academic year. In just two recruiting years we have put together an incredible foundation in all the event areas which was one of our goals. I am very proud of the efforts of the coaching staff and of course with the team members who continue to play a really big part in our recruiting, especially when we have them campus to visit. Big year ahead for us all and we know the entire men and women teams and staff are really looking forward to some incredible things coming soon!"
Hamza Ali, Redshirt Junior, University of Minnesota, Distance
Hamza Ali joins SU by way of University of Minnesota and Minneapolis Washburn High School. Hamza was a 2x All-State Honoree winning back-to-back state titles in the 1600m in 2015 and 2016, adding the 3200m title in 2016 as well. He won back-to-back state team cross country titles in 2015 and 2016 and helped his high school team win four consecutive state team titles in track from 2013-2016. He has a top 40-finish in the Division I Midwest Regional Cross Country championships in a time of 30:01.80 over 10,000m. In 2017, Hamza represented Team USA at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships Junior Division finishing in 53rd place, 3rd for Team USA. 1500: 3:52.74, 3000m indoor: 8:16.33, 5000m: 14.22.92
Andrew Ayers, Redshirt Senior, Lipscomb University, Distance
Andrew Ayers joins Seattle U from Lipscomb University after graduating locally from King’s High School. Andrew was a four-time All-State runner in cross country. In high school he was a four-time letterwinner in cross country and track, and three-time letterwinner in basketball. He holds the school record in 3200m, 5000m cross country, and a State team championship in basketball. In 2017, Andrew had a PR of 3:55.32 for a 6th place finish at the ASUN Conference Championships for Lipscomb. He is attending graduate school at SU.
Tyianna Barnett, Freshman, Curtis HS (University Place, WA), Jumps
Tyianna Barnett joins Seattle U from Curtis High School. Tyianna has a persona best 5-3 after a senior year with several top-3 finishes throughout the season.
Jay Grant, Freshman, South Salem HS (Oregon), Distance
Jay Grant joins Seattle U from South Salem High School in Oregon. Jay come off a senior year that had a 1st place finish at the Battle of the South Cross Country meet and a top 10 finish in the 6A Mountain Valley Conference XC Championships.
Delaney Griffin, Franklin HS (Portland, OR), Distance
Delaney Griffin joins Seattle U after an illustrious career at Franklin High School in Portland, OR. In cross country, Delaney finished top 5 at the 6a League Championships with a 13th place finish at the State meet. Delaney had three top 10 finishes at the 6A State Track Meet with a 10th place in the 4x400m, 7th place in the 1500m (4:36.78), and a 5th place in the 3,000m (9:59.17). She later dropped her 1500m PR to break the high school record with a new time of 4:36.48.
Ashley Hager, Freshman, Los Gatos HS (Los Gatos, CA), Jumps
Ashley Hagar joins Seattle U out of Los Gatos High School. She is the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League runner up in the triple Jump with a PR of 35-9.5 and finished the season with a top 10 finish at CCS Finals.
Gus Harquail, Freshman, Madison HS (Portland, OR), Distance
Gus Harquail, out of Madison High School in Oregon, joins Seattle University this fall. In cross country, Gus finished top 5 with a 4th place finish in the Portland League Championships and qualified for the state cross country meet. In track, Gus ran a PR of 1:57.01 for a 6th place finish in his league’s championships and advanced onto state in the 800m.
Emily Harris, Freshman, Ann Sobrato HS (Morgan Hills, CA), Distance
Emily joins Seattle U out of Ann Sobrato High School. Emily is coming off a cross country season where she finished 3rd in the CCS Championship meet before finishing top 30 at the CIF State Cross Country meet.
Dominic Jacobs, Freshman, Cleveland HS (Seattle), Sprints
Dominic Jacobs joins SU Track out of Cleveland High school here in Seattle. He had top 5 finishes in the Metro and Regional championships his senior year in the 100m and the 200m leading to PRs of 10.78 and 22.40, respectively.
Xavier Kelley, Freshman, Franklin HS (Seattle), Jumps
Xavier Kelley is a local product out of Franklin High School in South Seattle. New to track after a very successful basketball career, Xavier is joining the jumps team here at Seattle U primarily focusing on the high jump and long jump events.
Lance Mason, Freshman, Redmond HS (Redmond, WA), Distance
Lance Mason joins SU from across the bridges over in Redmond, Wash., having attended Redmond HS. Prior to an injury during the track season, Lance was coming off a successful cross country season with a top finish of 9th place at the 4A KingCo Conference Championships.
Maya McCabe, Freshman, San Lorenzo Valley HS (Felton, CA), Middle Distance
Maya McCabe joins SU out of San Lorenzo High School in the Bay Area of California. Maya is a very versatile athlete ranging from the 4x100m to the 800m and even cross country in the fall. Maya Helped her team to a 1st place finish in the 4x400m relay at CCS Finals, 7th place finish in the 4x100m at CCS Finals, and also earning a 6th place individual place in the 400m at CCS finals. Maya finished high school with PRs of 57.49 in the 400m and a 2:13.61 in the 800m as well as numerous top finishes in both relays.
Grace Much, Freshman, Bellingham HS (Bellingham, WA), Distance
Grace Much joins Seattle U out of Bellingham HS in Northwest Washington. She is a three-time state qualifier for 2019 in the 1600m and the 3200m and the 4x400m. Grace also qualified for the State cross country meet each of her 4 high school years finishing with an 18th place finish her senior year.
Noah Payne, Freshman, Seabury Hall HS (Hawaii), Sprints
Noah Payne, originally from Canada, joins Seattle U from Seabury Hall High School in Hawaii. Noah is one of the most successful sprinters to come out of Hawaii after setting many meet records in the 100m his senior year. After going undefeated in the 200m prior to the state meet, a slight injury slowed him down at State to a 3rd place finish in the 100m and PRs of 10.70 and 21.89 from his high school career.
Tom Topinka, Freshman, Iolani HS (Hawaii), Sprints
Tom Topinka, out of Iolani High School in Hawaii, joins Seattle U as an all-around sprinter. Tom was an integral part of his team’s relays throughout the season while also setting PRs in the 100m, 200m and the 400m his senior season.
