SEATTLE – Joana Alves of Seattle University women’s basketball has made the Portuguese National Team for the 2019 Napoli Summer World University Games.  She and her teammates are in Naples, Italy for the event, which runs from July 3-11.

"Making the team and being to represent my country makes me feel incredibly accomplished," said Alves. "This was a goal I set for myself since the beginning of last season, so it really is the culmination of a year's worth of intense work. I feel blessed, proud, and honored and I can't wait for what experience has in store for me."

"Joana showed steady improvement throughout the season," said Seattle U Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. "As her confidence grew so did her production. She ended the year being one of our top contributors. She went right back to work in the spring, regaining her strength and conditioning. This is a great accomplishment for Joana. We are very proud of her."

Portugal will play in Pool B in the 16-team tournament. It will face Argentina (July 3), Romania (July 4), and Russia (July 5) in pool play. The top teams from the group will qualify for the quarterfinals, while the bottom two squads will move into the bracket for ninth to 16th place.

At the 2017 Summer World University Games, Portugal placed ninth out of 16 teams. Australia won the event in Taiwan.

Alves was an All-WAC Second Team selection for the Redhawks in 2018-19. She averaged 13.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. She topped SU in field goal percentage (46.7) and blocked shots (0.9).
