SEATTLE – Seattle U men’s tennis entered their second late-night match in a row on Saturday with high hopes as they continued their quest for their first conference win, facing off against New Mexico State at the Amy Yee Tennis Center. After four hours of back-and-forth play, the Redhawks walked away with a hard-fought 5-2 loss to the Aggies.
Sophomores Colton Weeldreyer and Emilio Monroy both took three-set victories in singles. Weeldreyer shone during his match with a strong 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 outing, while Monroy displayed similarly impressive scores in his 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 duel. Freshman Billy Givens-Jensen also battled for three sets in a 3-6, 7-6, 9-11 final, while junior Arshak Ghazaryan’s (2-6, 6-7 [5-7]) match was so close that it required a tiebreaker. Junior Adrian Alvarez-Sanabria (2-6, 5-7) picked up steam toward the end but was unable to overcome his opponent’s strong start. Finally, fellow junior Alex Chan started off strong but fell 4-6, 1-6 to New Mexico State’s Martin Simicek.
The Redhawks made a serious effort in doubles play, with the duo of Ghazaryan and Weeldreyer earning a 6-4 win over their opponents. The other two matches had different results, however, as Chan and Monroy lost 2-6 while Alvarez-Sanabria and Givens-Jensen lost 1-6.
Seattle U enters their final matchup of the regular season early Sunday morning, as they face conference rival Chicago State at 8:30 AM at the Amy Yee Tennis Center.
