SEATTLE – Seattle University softball took Ohio State to extra innings Friday, but the Buckeyes pulled out a 6-4 decision in eight at the Husky Classic, hosted by UW. Madison Cathcart drove in all four Redhawk runs in the contest.
OSU, among those receiving votes in several national polls this week, scored two runs in the first and added another in the second before Andie Larkins settled in and held down the Buckeyes. In the bottom of the third, the Redhawks answered. With one out, Ally Choate drew a walk. Cathcart followed with a blast to centerfield, hitting her sixth home run of the year and getting SU within a run at 3-2.
Andie Larkins kept Seattle U (11-8) close in the middle of the game. The senior tallied a 4-6-3 double play in the third and then posted a strikeout to end the frame. Larkins worked around a base hit in the fourth, snagging a comebacker to close the inning. In the fifth, she struck out a pair of batters and then logged a 1-3 groundout to get her offense back to the plate.
In the bottom of the fifth, Olivia Viggiano bunted and reached second on an error. A Choate groundball advanced Viggiano to third base. Cathcart then flied out to left, driving in Viggiano to even the score at 3.
Larkins contained the Buckeyes to just a single in the sixth, bringing SU back to bat again. Carley Nance singled up the middle, and after reaching on a fielder’s choice, Cherise Silvan stole second with two outs. The Redhawks were unable to push across the go-ahead run, though.
An error allowed OSU to get a runner aboard in the top of the seventh. Larkins earned two outs, but then walked a Buckeye to put two on. Nance came on in relief and quickly induced a groundout to short.
After going down in order in the seventh, the teams headed to extra innings. Ohio State struck for three runs in its half, forcing Seattle U to produce a big inning to keep the game going. Choate was placed on second to begin the frame. Cathcart promptly lashed a double to the wall in right center, bringing in Choate. SU could not keep the rally going, however, as the Buckeyes escaped.
Cathcart went 2-4 with a walk and four RBIs. Nance collected a hit and two walks. Larkins went 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits.
SU was set to play Idaho State Friday morning, but rain forced a cancellation of the contest.
The Redhawks are scheduled to face Ohio State and Northern Illinois tomorrow at Washington.
