SPOKANE, WASH. – After Saturday’s crushing loss to Gonzaga, Seattle U men’s tennis was looking hard for a win to lift their spirits, and got their wish in a 7-0 sweep of Whitworth College on Sunday morning. The Redhawks won decisively in each of their singles and doubles matches to clinch their second victory of the season.
Sophomore Colton Weeldreyer started off singles play with a decisive 6-1, 6-3 victory over the Pirates’ Jake Bethards, followed by junior Arshak Ghazaryan’s 6-3, 6-0 win. Junior Trenton Nield also impressed, hanging on to triumph 6-2, 6-4, while sophomore Emilio Monroy (6-1, 6-0) made quick work of his opponent. Finally, juniors Alex Chan and Adrian Sanabria both posted scores of 6-2, 6-3 to nab the fifth and sixth points for the Redhawks.
Doubles play was similarly smooth. The first win of the day went to Chan and freshman Billy Givens-Jensen, who teamed up in a solid 6-1 effort over Whitworth’s Jake Bethards and Jacob Floyd. Nield and Ghazaryan were able to score a solid victory of 6-2, with Weeldreyer and Monroy matching them in their own 6-2 final.
“This was a good boost of confidence for us, and a solid performance by the boys,” said Assistant Coach Chris Borden. “Hopefully, we can use this win to gain some traction going forward.”
Next, the Redhawks face George Fox in Newberg, Ore., on Friday, March 8. Play will begin at 3:30 PM.
