SEATTLE – Seattle U men’s tennis had some thrilling matchups on Sunday afternoon against the University of Idaho, but were ultimately overwhelmed by the Vandals in a 7-0 sweep after winning just one doubles match.

Sophomore Emilio Monroy took Idaho’s Valentin Popsecu to three sets in singles, the first of which involved a tiebreaker, but was only just unable to pull out the win in a 6-7(5), 7-5, 7-10 nailbiter. Freshman Billy Givens-Jensen’s singles matchup also went to three sets, but the end result matched Monroy’s in the end with a 2-6, 6-2, 9-11 loss. Juniors Arshak Ghazaryan (4-6, 2-6), Alex Chan (4-6, 3-6) and Adrian Sanabria (2-6, 5-7) all fought well, along with sophomore Trenton Nield (3-6, 2-6), but their Vandal opponents all proved to be too much at the time.

In doubles, the Redhawks found more success, as the duo of Nield and Ghazaryan easily defeated the Vandals’ Carlos Longhi Neto and Lucas Coutinho in a 6-1 rout. That was the only win of the day for Seattle U, however, as Givens-Jensen and Sanabria lost 3-6 and the Chan-Monroy combo’s close 5-7 defeat clinched the doubles point for Idaho.

“I have to give credit to Idaho for stepping up at the crucial points today,” said Assistant Coach Chris Borden. “I don’t feel that this result reflects our ability as a team. Moving forward, we need to play with more confidence and aggression.”

Seattle U will get a few more days to hone their skills before heading to St. George, Utah, on Feb. 22 to take on the Southern Utah Thunderbirds.
