TEMPE – Seattle University softball led No. 25 Oregon into the fifth inning, but the Ducks rallied and held on for an 8-6 win Sunday morning. Madison Cathcart hit a three-run home run and walked three times in SU’s final game at the 2019 Kajikawa Classic.
“All weekend, we battled,” said Coach Geoff Hirai. We didn’t get the results that we wanted. We’ll move forward and we’re on to Las Vegas next weekend.
After a scoreless first inning, SU (1-4) got on the board in the top of the second. Stephanie Merwin worked to a full count and then hammered a high pitch over the left field fence for a 1-0 lead.
Carley Nance kept the Ducks at zero in the bottom of the second. The Redhawks scrapped to scratch out another run in the third. Ally Choate was hit by a pitch, Madison Cathcart walked, and Bailey Thompson was hit, loading the bases with no one out. A fielder’s choice kept the bases loaded, and with two outs, Cathcart took off on a wild pitch and slid in safely to put SU ahead, 2-0.
Oregon put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the third, tying the contest at 2.
Mekenzie Madokoro reached on an error with one out in the fourth, starting a Redhawk rally. After a strikeout, Choate singled to put two runners aboard for Cathcart. The junior drilled a 3-1 delivery far over the rightcenter field wall, giving the Redhawks a 5-2 margin.
The Ducks answered with a single run in their half of the frame. With two outs and two on, Allie Bunker lofted a flyball into left centerfield. Mekenzie Madokoro sprinted over and made a diving catch as SU took a two-run difference into the fifth. Oregon broke out for five runs in the fifth, gaining control of the game.
In the sixth, Choate and Cathcart both walked again to start another threat. The Redhawks hit into a double play, but Choate wisely took off home on the throw to first and beat the throw home to cut the deficit. The Ducks got out of the frame, and despite a Madakoro single in the seventh, held on to their lead.
Cathcart homered and drew three walks. Choate had a hit, walked twice, and scored a pair of runs. Merwin hit a homer and walked.
Seattle U heads to UNLV for the Boyd Gaming Classic next weekend. It will play five games at the event.
