DENVER – The Western Athletic Conference announced on Tuesday that they have named Seattle U freshman Martina Asciuto as the conference’s Female Tennis Athlete of the Week for Jan. 29-Feb. 4.
Asciuto, who hails from Irvine, Calif., went 3-0 on singles matches over the weekend. She took her first opponent, Whitman’s Audrey Grigore, to three sets on Friday, Feb. 1, ultimately prevailing 6-2, 4-6, 10-7. The next day, she took down Eastern Washington’s Stephanie Broussard 6-4, 7-5, and on the following day triumphed over Alexandra Barry of Lewis-Clark State, 6-1, 6-0.
"I am very excited about Martina's win," said Seattle U women's tennis Head Coach Joey Barnes. "We have worked a lot on several aspects of her game - building her belief in her own abilities is one of them. This past weekend, she took control and did what she needed to do. She has such a great upside. As a coach, you are always proud to see someone like Martina put her talents to the test, her competitive drive in gear, and her willingness to perform on the line. Well done to her."
Next up, Asciuto and the Redhawks will face Portland on Feb. 8 at the Jupiter Tennis Center. Play will start at 8:30 AM PST.
