BAKERSFIELD, Calif. –  Little went right for Seattle U men’s basketball Thursday night in its Western Athletic Conference opener as the Redhawks fell 83-71 at CSU Bakersfield.

The Redhawks move to 12-4 on the season and 0-1 in WAC play while the ‘Runners improve to 9-5 overall, 1-0 in the WAC.

Delante Jones and Terrell Brown led Seattle U with 18 points apiece. Myles Carter also scored in double figures, finishing with 12 points to go along with eight rebounds. Brown had a team-high 10 boards for his fifth double-double of the season.

A pair of Jones’ threes early in the first half gave Seattle U a 6-4 lead at the 18:19 mark of the first half. But it would end up being the last lead the Redhawks would hold. Hitting just 8-26 from the field in the first half, the Redhawks scored a season low 27 points in the frame.

CSUB, meanwhile, was hot, hitting 14-27 from the field to carry a 37-27 lead into the break.

The Redhawks found more rhythm in the second half, hitting 48 percent from the field (12-25) and nearly 46 percent from three (5-11). But in trading buckets with the ‘Runners, they could not cut into the lead.

"The game of basketball usually gives you what you deserve and tonight, we deserved to lose," said Head Coach Jim Hayford. "CSU Bakersfield played winning basketball and deserved to win. The WAC road is tough  and road wins must be earned. We need to get better from this."

Damiyne Durham paced the ‘Runners with 20 points. Jarkel Joiner added 16 and Darrin Person chipped in 10.

Seattle U return to action on Saturday, traveling to face Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. Tip off from GCU Arena is scheduled for 6 p.m. Mountain Time, 5 p.m. Pacific. The game will broadcast live on ESPN3 and can be heard via a web stream only at mynorthwest.com.
